Becky Menday 7th place at Burton European Open 2012
February 25th 2012:
This weekend 13 year old Becky Menday from Waddesdon, entered the 2012 Junior Burton European Open in Laax in Switzerland. This year the whole park for the event had been moved to a brand new location at the Crap Sogn Gion region of the mountain. The layout was to be very different for this years event, including 4 kickers and a whole range of features at the end of the course. Riders would have a freedom of choice over what features to hit and could create their own unique runs.
Becky arrived at the mountain on the Friday, but had to miss half of practice that day due to a bad stomach upset. She was determined to enter the slope style competition the next day despite still suffering from bad stomach cramps.
She was competing against 20 other girls from all over the World including the USA and Japan. Her first run had her in 5th place, but after being unable to land a huge backside 360 off the last kicker in her last run, she finished in 7th.
Becky said ” I was really pleased to finish in 7th, as the standard of riding was amazing, and I was not feeling my best this weekend.”
Next week she is back to Laax for training with the GB Freestyle Team for a week, before competing in the British Championships there the following week.
Still to come for the young shredder is the finals of the World Rookie Fest in Ischgl in Austria in April. Becky is currently in 9th place in the World Rookie Fest after leading the event for the past two competitions, she has only been able to compete in two of the three competitions so far held and is hoping to regain the top slot after the Finals.
All the best
